C O N C E P T

Sans-Serif)

"SANS-SERIF"

In 1916, Edward Johnston designed the Johnston Sans typeface for Transport for London.

His famous typeface was used for the London subway ("tube"), buses, trains, station signage and posters,
and his pioneering work in developing the typeface has long endeared him to Londoners.

Johnston Sans is a member of the famous Helvetica, Futura and Universe typeface families – a beautiful sans-serif design,
and the original model of modern English typefaces.

Serifs, also known as scales or whiskers, are lines or decorations added to the edges of letters.

"Sans", which means "without" in French, is added to the names of typefaces without serifs to distinguish them from serifed designs.

Major sans-serif typefaces, such as Johnston Sans and Helvetica, have been used for bus destination signs.
They were silkscreened onto materials such as linen in the '50s through the '70s, and Tyvek in the '80s.

Our tote bags integrate the functional beauty of bus destination signs and are sewn with high-quality Japanese canvas.

"SANS-SERIF" – to the great typographers, we salute you.

SANS-SERIF's destination signs were actually used on UK buses (the rotating destinations displayed on the front of buses).

I was so fascinated by the beauty of the letters found on vintage destination signs that I bought one directly from a collector in England, and displayed it in my studio at the time.

After I started collecting them, I discovered that the fabrics differed over the years.
Soft linen was used in the '50s, linen canvas in the '60s and '70s,
and Tyvek started to appear in the '80s. In the 2000s, mylar film was introduced.

(Tyvek is a non-woven, lightweight and durable high-density polyethylene material.
I found the paper-like texture and wrinkling interesting.)

There was also a variety of colours and typefaces and that could be appreciated from UK destination signs outside of London.
They vary with each city: white letters on green for Portsmouth, yellow letters on blue for Glasgow, and so on.
A "pop" look exists compared with the black and white signs of London.

I also learned that, although there is a collector's market for vintage destination signs, many are discarded.
Thus was born the idea of making bags using these materials.

In November 2016, while making our own prototypes,
we met a highly experienced textile craftsperson in Kyoto, leading to the commercialization of our bags.

We communicated our thoughts and determined the most suitable manufacturing method for making strong,
durable bags – each sewn by hand with expert skill.

At SANS-SERIF, we are also working on products incorporating other "upcycled" materials that portray interesting patterns, typefaces and characters found in our history.
The OBI series, which uses the traditional graphic expressions found in Japanese kimono, launches in 2020.

We hope you will enjoy our bags not just as a collector,
but also for everyday use: they have been designed and produced exactly for that purpose.
SANS-SERIF can be part of a new style that is unique to you.
